The “Knochenhauer-Amtshaus”
The “Knochenhauer-Amtshaus” in Hildesheim was built in 1529 and its gable was 26 metres high. At the time of its construction it wasn't only a symbol of middle-class power and social wealth, but also an artistic work of master art in the late Gothic period. It is considered to be the most beautiful wooden house in the world. After 1945 a hotel was built on the same grounds. Because of the Hildesheim Citizens' Initiative and with the support of the city, it was possible to have the building pulled down in 1986 and then the reconstruction of the Knochenhauer-Amtshaus true to the original in its own place in 1989. For the reconstruction 400 cubic metres of oak wood were needed, and they were fastened together with about 7,500 wooden nails with more than 4,300 connections by carpenters using traditional methods. The carvings on the beams and supports could be reproduced thanks to the photogrammetrie using old photos. The vaulted cellar was reconstructed out of sandstone blocks according to a part that had been discovered during excavations.
