Mosque

The mosque is the place of worship of the Muslims. As is the case with Christian churches, the mosques in various countries have various shapes and sizes. According to the importance of a mosque, it has one or several tall, slender towers (minarets) with tower galleries at the top. From there the muezzin, the man who calls to prayer, calls the Muslims to prayer five times a day. When the Muslim hears this, he spreads out a small prayer rug wherever he might be at the moment – in the street or in the house – and stands facing the direction of the Arabian City of Mecca, then he falls to the ground and silently recites the "short prayer". It is the 1st Sura, the first chapter of the Koran, the holy book of Islam.
The Muslims go to the mosque on Fridays. They pray there too, together with the Imam, the leader of the mosque, who prays facing Mecca. In the mosque, the direction of Mecca is indicated by a richly decorated niche (mihrab). On the right next to this prayer niche there is an equally beautiful pulpit (minbar), where the Imam stands to hold his Friday sermons. The mosque has no seats, but the floor is covered with magnificent carpets. The Muslim takes off his shoes in front of the mosque and washes his face, hands and feet in the well-house.
There is a crescent on top of the mosque. It corresponds to the cross on Christian churches. Our "Red Cross" corresponds to the "Red Crescent" in Islamic countries.
